Museum of Herzegovina
Regional museum of Mostar and Herzegovina, with memorial houses and the Old Bridge museum.
The Museum of Herzegovina was founded in 1950 to gather and present the cultural and historical heritage of Mostar and the wider region. Its headquarters stand on Bajatova, a stepped lane in the old quarter above the Neretva, a few minutes from the Old Bridge. Work is organised around four disciplines: archaeology, history, ethnology and literature, and the holdings run from excavated material and photographs to furniture, textiles and domestic objects documenting town life.
The museum is spread across several buildings. The Dzemal Bijedic Memorial House covers the career of the Yugoslav prime minister who died in a plane crash in 1977. The Svetozar Corovic Memorial House is given over to literature, including material on the poet Aleksa Santic. The Museum of the Old Bridge, opened in 2004 in the Tara tower, sets out the archaeology and rebuilding of the 1557 crossing, and the MuM interpretation centre addresses the city's religious and ethnological make-up.
