War Childhood Museum
Museum of objects and testimonies from children who lived through war, in central Sarajevo.
The War Childhood Museum opened in January 2017 on Logavina street, a short walk uphill from the Bascarsija quarter. It grew out of a project begun in 2010 by Jasminko Halilovic, who invited people who had been children during the siege of Sarajevo to describe that experience in a few lines. More than a thousand replies were published as a book in 2013, and the responses that followed brought in the physical objects around which the museum was later built.
The permanent display pairs everyday belongings with short written accounts by their donors: toys, diaries, letters, clothing and improvised household items. The collection now holds several thousand objects and a growing archive of recorded oral histories, and the museum has widened its remit to children affected by conflict elsewhere. In 2018 it received the Council of Europe Museum Prize within the European Museum of the Year Award. Temporary and travelling exhibitions supplement the permanent rooms.
