Yeltsin Center
Presidential museum, art gallery and cultural centre on the Iset in Yekaterinburg, opened in 2015.
The Yeltsin Center opened in November 2015 beside the Iset river as Russia's first presidential centre, combining a museum of the country's first president with an archive, library, lecture halls, a cinema and an art gallery. The existing concrete frame was reclad by Boris Bernaskoni in perforated aluminium panels that read as a screen by day and are lit at night. Around the building are a public square and a walkway down to the river.
The Museum of Boris Yeltsin occupies the upper floor and presents the political history of the 1980s and 1990s through reconstructed interiors, film and documents, including a replica of the presidential office and a sequence of themed halls. The separate art gallery has mounted some 150 exhibitions of twentieth and twenty-first century Russian, Urals and international art. The centre also runs a library, an archive of documents from the period, a bookshop and an education programme.
