Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia
City history museum inside the Venetian walls, tracing Nicosia from antiquity to the present day.
The Leventis Municipal Museum is the only museum devoted to the history of Nicosia itself. It was created by the city with support from the A. G. Leventis Foundation and opened in 1989 in a restored nineteenth-century house on Ippokratous Street, inside the Venetian walls. In 1991 it received the European Museum of the Year Award. A major refurbishment completed in 2013 reorganised the galleries and added new display and education spaces.
The permanent display runs backwards in time through the building, from the modern city and the British colonial period, through Ottoman and Venetian Nicosia, the Lusignan kingdom and the Byzantine centuries, to prehistoric and classical material. Objects include costume, jewellery, furniture, maps, engravings, coins, ceramics and photographs. A temporary exhibition hall carries changing shows, and a courtyard cafe and shop occupy part of the restored house.
