East Slovak Museum
One of Slovakia's oldest museums, keeper of the Kosice Gold Treasure of nearly 3,000 coins.
The East Slovak Museum was founded in 1872 and formally constituted in 1876 as the Museum of Upper Hungary, making it one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Slovakia. Its neo-Renaissance main building on Namestie Maratonu mieru was raised around the turn of the twentieth century and was the first structure in Kosice designed from the outset to serve as a museum. The collections are organised in departments of natural science, history and art history, and run to hundreds of thousands of items.
The best known holding is the Kosice Gold Treasure, a hoard of some 2,920 gold ducats and double ducats with jewellery, found in the city in August 1935 and dating from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries; its display reopened in December 2024 after renovation. The museum also runs a branch on Hviezdoslavova street with natural history and ethnographic galleries, the medieval Miklus Prison, and a House of Crafts on Hrnciarska street. A wooden belfry from Transcarpathia stands in the museum park.
