Czech Museum of Silver
Museum of Kutna Hora's silver mining in the Gothic Hradek, with a walk through a medieval mine.
The Czech Museum of Silver continues the work of the Vocel Archaeological Society, founded in 1877 to care for the historic and artistic heritage of the Kutna Hora region. It now looks after more than 170,000 objects. Archaeology is the largest holding, with almost 120,000 items, followed by a numismatic collection of some 19,000 coins, medals and banknotes, along with fine art, geology, applied art and a specialist collection of mining technology that is among the oldest in Europe.
The main building is the Hradek, a late Gothic fortified house on Barborska street in the UNESCO-listed old town. One route covers the town of silver and its mining history; the second, the Way of Silver, includes a walk in white miner's coats through a medieval mine beneath the town and lasts about ninety minutes. The museum also runs the Stone House on Vaclavske namesti, with a display of burgher life in the 17th to 19th centuries, and Tyl's House.
