Institute and Museum Bitola
City museum in the former Ottoman military academy, with a memorial room for Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
The museum occupies the long stone building of the Monastir Military High School, completed in 1899 when Bitola was a garrison and consular city of the Ottoman Empire. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk studied here between 1896 and 1899, and a memorial room devoted to his years in the town forms one of the displays. The institution combines a museum with the regional office for the protection of cultural monuments, and moved into the former academy in 1983.
The permanent exhibition runs through the history of Bitola and the Pelagonia plain in chronological order, from prehistoric and Roman finds, including material from nearby Heraclea Lyncestis, to the consular era, the Ilinden uprising and the twentieth century. Ethnographic rooms show regional costume, jewellery and household objects, and there are collections of icons, photography and applied art. Temporary exhibitions and a sculpture display occupy the courtyard and side wings of the building.
