St Fagans National Museum of History
An open-air museum of historic buildings rebuilt from across Wales.
St Fagans is one of Europe's leading open-air museums, set in the parkland of St Fagans Castle, an Elizabethan manor house on the western edge of Cardiff. It opened in 1948 as the Welsh Folk Museum. Since then more than forty historic buildings from all over Wales have been taken down and rebuilt on its 100 acres, from farmhouses and a chapel to a workmen's institute, shops and a pub.
A £30 million redevelopment completed in 2018 added new galleries, the Gweithdy craft workshop and a reconstructed medieval royal court, and won the museum Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2019. Craftspeople demonstrate traditional skills, native breeds graze the farm and the gardens surround the castle, giving visitors a hands-on picture of how people in Wales have lived, worked and worshipped. Entry is free.
