Museum of Peja
Regional museum in the konak of Tahir Bey, an 18th-century Ottoman house by Peja's old bazaar.
The regional museum of Peja was established in 1983 and occupies the konak of Tahir Bey, a timber-framed Ottoman residence built for a local notable around 1800. The house originally stood in the centre of town and was dismantled and re-erected on Haxhi Zeka Square in 1960, next to the old bazaar. Its projecting upper storey, carved ceilings and enclosed courtyard make the building itself one of the principal exhibits.
Around a hundred and twenty objects are shown in the reconstructed rooms, covering costume, weaving, jewellery, copperware, weapons and furnishings from Peja, the Rugova highlands and the Dukagjin plain. The ground floor and courtyard hold an archaeological section with Roman funerary stelae of the second century, Bronze Age pottery fragments and coins of the Byzantine, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods. Staff give guided tours in Albanian and English.
