Tiraspol United Museum
Regional history museum in a former noble assembly house, with branches across Tiraspol.
The Tiraspol United Museum was created on 8 May 1958 by an order of the Ministry of Culture of the Moldavian SSR, bringing together several existing collections in the town under one administration. Its main building on 25 October Street is a former noble assembly house in a classical idiom with baroque touches, distinguished by two tiers of tall arched windows and heavy columns at the ceremonial entrance. The combined holdings now amount to roughly a hundred thousand items covering the archaeology, ethnography and modern history of the lower Dniester.
Besides the main historical and local-studies display, the institution administers a group of branches: the memorial house of the chemist Nikolai Zelinsky, who was born in Tiraspol, the museum in the building that served as the headquarters of Grigory Kotovsky's cavalry brigade, a picture gallery and a display on the history of the Tiraspol fortress. Permanent exhibitions cover the town's foundation in the late eighteenth century, everyday life in the region, the Second World War and the conflict of 1992.
