M Leuven
Leuven's city museum by Stéphane Beel, joining old and new wings around a courtyard and roof terrace.
M Leuven is the municipal museum of Leuven, showing the city's historic collections alongside a changing programme of contemporary art. The holdings are strongest in medieval sculpture and painting from the Meuse and Brabant regions, including work by Dieric Bouts, Rogier van der Weyden's circle and the Leuven sculptor Jan Borman, together with nineteenth-century Belgian painting and a growing contemporary collection. The museum also runs the Experience Bouts presentation in Saint Peter's Church on the Grote Markt.
The building opened in September 2009 to a design by the Ghent architect Stéphane Beel, who wove together the neoclassical Vanderkelen-Vrouwenvliet house, a former college building and two new volumes around a courtyard and a sequence of terraces. Daylight is drawn into the galleries from above, and an open roof terrace gives views over the roofs of Leuven. The museum takes its single-letter name from the Dutch word for museum and has become a landmark of the city's cultural quarter.
