National Museum of Slovenia
Slovenia's oldest museum, founded in 1821, in a neo-Renaissance palace beside Tivoli Park.
The museum was founded in 1821 as the Estate Museum of Carniola and is the oldest in the country. Its home on Muzejska ulica, the Rudolfinum, went up between 1883 and 1885 to a neo-Renaissance design by Wilhelm Rezori and opened on 2 December 1888, the first building in the Slovene lands put up purely for cultural use. The main hall ceiling carries medallions painted in 1885 by the brothers Janez and Jurij Subic.
Four departments cover archaeology, numismatics, prints and drawings, and history with applied arts. Among the best-known objects are the bone flute from Divje Babe, associated with Neanderthals, and the bronze situla from Vace with its narrative frieze. The museum shares the Muzejska building with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History and runs a second site at Metelkova, along with outposts at Sneznik Castle and the Roman fort of Ad Pirum.
