National Museum Cardiff
Art, natural history and geology in Cardiff’s civic centre.
National Museum Cardiff occupies a domed Portland stone building in Cathays Park, Cardiff's grand civic centre, next to City Hall. Designed by Smith and Brewer, it opened to the public in 1922 and is the flagship of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales, combining national art collections with natural history and archaeology under one roof.
Its art galleries are internationally known for the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings bequeathed by the Davies sisters of Gregynog, including works by Monet, Renoir, Cézanne and Van Gogh, alongside centuries of Welsh art. Downstairs, the Evolution of Wales galleries tell the story of the land from the Big Bang to the Ice Age, with dinosaurs and mammoths along the way. Entry is free.
