Musée des Confluences
A science and anthropology museum in a crystal-and-cloud building where the Rhône meets the Saône.
The Musée des Confluences is Lyon's museum of natural sciences and human societies, opened in December 2014 at the southern tip of the Presqu'île where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet. It inherits the collections of the former Lyon natural history museum and the ethnographic holdings associated with Émile Guimet, bringing fossils, minerals, animal specimens and objects from cultures around the world under one roof.
Its deconstructivist building by the Austrian practice Coop Himmelb(l)au pairs a glass 'Crystal' entrance hall with a floating stainless-steel 'Cloud' that houses the galleries. Permanent exhibitions trace big questions about the origins of the universe, the diversity of species, human societies and beliefs about death, alongside a changing programme of temporary exhibitions, concerts and talks.
