Museum of Herzegovina, Trebinje
Regional museum inside Trebinje's walled old town, covering archaeology, art and folk life.
The Museum of Herzegovina was founded in Trebinje in 1952 as a local heritage museum and has since grown into the principal collecting institution for the eastern Herzegovina region. It occupies a nineteenth-century building within the walled old town, a compact quarter of narrow lanes laid out under Ottoman and later Austro-Hungarian rule beside the Trebišnjica river. Entry is through the old town gates, and the museum sits a short walk from the square and the Osman Pasha mosque.
Five departments divide the holdings: archaeology, art history, ethnology, history and natural sciences. The art collection runs to around a thousand paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings, while the ethnological rooms show costume, textiles and household objects from the Herzegovinian karst villages. A memorial room is devoted to the poet and diplomat Jovan Dučić, who was born in Trebinje. The museum runs a reference library and has published the scholarly journal Tribunia since 1975.
