Fondation Beyeler
Renzo Piano museum in a Riehen park holding the Beyeler collection of modern and contemporary art.
The Fondation Beyeler opened in 1997 in Riehen, on the northern edge of Basel, to house the collection of the dealer Ernst Beyeler and his wife Hildy. Renzo Piano placed the long, low gallery beside the Berower Park, using porphyry walls and a glass roof that filters daylight onto the paintings. A water-lily pond runs along the garden front, so that Monet canvases hang within sight of real water.
The collection holds around 400 works of classic modern and contemporary art, with concentrations of Picasso, Monet, Cezanne, Giacometti, Rothko, Bacon and Klee, shown alongside objects from Africa, Oceania and Alaska as the Beyelers intended. A programme of temporary exhibitions runs through the year. From September 2026 three new buildings by Peter Zumthor, the Wyss Museum, the Ammann Pavilion and the Erlen gatehouse, are opening in stages, together with a much enlarged public park.
