Mucem
The museum of European and Mediterranean civilisations, linked to Fort Saint-Jean in Marseille’s old port.
The Mucem is France's national museum dedicated to the cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean, opened in Marseille in 2013 when the city was European Capital of Culture. It spreads across three sites: the J4 building on the old harbour pier, the historic Fort Saint-Jean guarding the entrance to the Vieux-Port, and a conservation and resource centre in the Belle de Mai district.
Rudy Ricciotti's J4 is a glass cube wrapped in a lace-like lattice of ultra-high-performance concrete, linked to the fort by a slender footbridge high above the water. Its collections cover everyday life, popular culture, beliefs and history around the Mediterranean, with long-running galleries and a changing programme of temporary exhibitions, and the rooftop terraces and fort gardens are free to walk around.
