M Shed
Bristol’s museum of the city, in a 1950s transit shed on the harbourside.
M Shed is Bristol's city museum, housed in a converted dockside transit shed on Princes Wharf beside the Floating Harbour. The building was formerly home to the Bristol Industrial Museum, and its name comes from the letters the port used to identify its sheds. It reopened as M Shed in June 2011 after a conversion designed by LAB Architecture Studio, and entry is free.
Around 3,000 objects and stories trace Bristol's places, people and working life, including frank displays on the city's part in the transatlantic slave trade, transport and the arts. Outside, the museum's working exhibits bring the harbour to life: historic electric cranes, steam trains on the dockside railway and heritage boats run trips on selected days.
