Memorial House of Mother Teresa
Museum on Macedonia Street marking the Skopje birthplace and early life of Mother Teresa.
The Memorial House of Mother Teresa opened on 30 January 2009 on Macedonia Street in central Skopje, close to the site of the Catholic church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus where Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was baptised in 1910. The building was designed by the Macedonian architect Vangel Božinovski in a deliberately irregular, sculptural manner, with leaning walls, an open steel bell tower and forms that quote the demolished church rather than reproduce it.
Inside, the ground floor holds displays on Bojaxhiu's Skopje childhood, her years with the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and India and the founding of the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, together with personal belongings, letters and photographs, and a copy of her 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. The upper level contains a chapel used for services and concerts, and a reconstruction of the room where she is thought to have made the decision to enter religious life. Admission is free and the displays are labelled in Macedonian, Albanian and English.
