National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan's largest museum, with Saka gold, Great Steppe archaeology and modern history halls.
The National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan opened on Independence Square in Astana in 2014 and is the largest museum in the country. Its seven blocks, rising to nine storeys and clad in white marble and glass, enclose roughly 74,000 square metres of floor space. Fourteen permanent halls trace the territory from prehistory through the Saka and Turkic periods to the Kazakh khanates, the Soviet decades and the years since independence, supported by research, conservation and publishing departments.
Displays combine original finds with reconstructions and digital installations. The Hall of Gold presents Saka goldwork, including a reconstruction of the Golden Man warrior costume from Issyk, while the Hall of Ancient History shows Bronze Age and Iron Age material from steppe burial mounds. Further galleries cover ethnography, the capital's own construction, and modern art, and a separate block houses temporary exhibitions. Guided tours run in Kazakh, Russian and English, and the museum also operates lecture halls and a cinema space.
