Celje Regional Museum
Slovenia's second oldest museum, in a Renaissance mansion famed for its painted Celje Ceiling.
The Celje Regional Museum was founded in 1882 and is the second oldest museum in Slovenia. Its displays occupy two buildings on Trg celjskih knezov: the Old Counts' Mansion, a Renaissance house standing on medieval foundations, and the Princely Palace, once the town residence of the Counts of Celje. Between them they cover the region's past from prehistory to the early twentieth century, and the museum also looks after a number of further heritage sites in the Savinja valley.
The best known exhibit is the Celje Ceiling, a large illusionistic painting on wooden boards installed in the mansion's great hall around 1600, filled with mythological and hunting scenes framed by painted architecture; its author is not known. Other displays include a lapidarium of Roman stone monuments, cultural history rooms covering the thirteenth to twentieth centuries, an exhibition on the Counts of Celje, and Celeia - City Beneath the City, where Roman streets and buildings are shown in situ in the cellars.
