Museo del Carnaval de Barranquilla
Museum of the Barranquilla Carnival beside the Casa del Carnaval in Barrio Abajo.
The Casa del Carnaval is a house in the traditional Barrio Abajo, remodelled in the 1990s by the Caridi Mitriani family and handed to the Fundación Carnaval de Barranquilla as the headquarters of the festival. A first display, the Sala del Carnaval Elsa Caridi, opened there on 7 April 2011 in partnership with the Museo del Caribe. A purpose-built museum in the adjoining plot was announced in 2018, built through 2019 and inaugurated that December.
The Barranquilla Carnival was proclaimed by UNESCO a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003, and the museum presents it year round. Galleries explain the origins of the festival on the lower Magdalena, its dances such as the congo, garabato and cumbia, and its characters, notably the marimonda and the Joselito Carnaval. Costumes, masks, floats, instruments, audiovisual displays and interactive rooms are shown, and visits are made in timed groups with guides.
