Sergei Parajanov Museum
House museum of the film director Sergei Parajanov, holding his collages, assemblages and film material.
Sergei Parajanov, the Soviet Armenian director of The Colour of Pomegranates and Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, was invited to Yerevan in the 1980s and a house was prepared for him in the Dzoragyugh quarter above the Hrazdan gorge. He died in 1990 before he could move in, and the building opened as a museum in 1991. The two-storey house is arranged around a courtyard and wooden balconies in the manner of old Tbilisi, the city where the director grew up.
The collection numbers several thousand items, among them collages, assemblages, drawings, dolls and hats made by Parajanov, many of them improvised from scraps during his years in prison and enforced idleness. Furniture and personal effects from his Tbilisi flat have been reassembled in several rooms, and other displays cover his screenplays, unfinished projects and correspondence. The museum lends widely and mounts temporary exhibitions and talks, and its collection has travelled to venues across Europe and North America.
