Museo del Caribe
Regional museum of the Colombian Caribbean, with six themed floors and a room devoted to García Márquez.
The Museo del Caribe was the first regional museum in Colombia, opened on 24 April 2009 as the centrepiece of the Parque Cultural del Caribe in the old centre of Barranquilla. The building was won in a competition entered by 48 practices from Colombia, Mexico, Argentina and Venezuela and was designed by the Barranquilla architect Giancarlo Mazzanti, who described the scheme as a series of shells wrapping around one another so that each space sits inside another.
Visitors start on the upper floor and work down through six themed rooms covering the natural environment of the Caribbean coast, its deep human past, the peoples who settled it, its languages and oral traditions, its music and its festivals, with film, sound and objects used throughout. A separate room, the Sala Macondo, is devoted to Gabriel García Márquez. The wider cultural park includes a children's library, a media library on García Márquez, a multi-purpose hall and an open-air theatre on the Plaza Mario Santo Domingo.
