The Family of Man, Clervaux Castle
Edward Steichen's 1955 photographic exhibition, shown permanently in the wings of Clervaux Castle.
The Family of Man is the photographic exhibition assembled by the Luxembourg-born photographer Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it opened in 1955. Steichen selected 503 pictures by 273 photographers from 68 countries and arranged them by the shared events of human life: birth, work, family, play, war and death. The show travelled the world for eight years and was seen by some nine million people before Steichen gave it to his country of birth.
The collection was installed at Clervaux Castle and opened to the public in 1994, following a restoration of the castle wings after wartime damage. It was inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World register in 2003 and was reinstalled after a thorough renovation completed in 2013. The display keeps Steichen's original sequence and scenography, with prints of varying scale hung on panels and suspended frames, and is managed by Luxembourg's Centre national de l'audiovisuel.
