The Burrell Collection
Sir William Burrell’s wide-ranging collection in Pollok Country Park.
The Burrell Collection holds the extraordinary gift of shipping magnate Sir William Burrell, who gave more than 9,000 objects to Glasgow in 1944. Its purpose-built home, a glass, timber and sandstone gallery set among the woodland of Pollok Country Park, opened in 1983 and became celebrated for the way it brings the trees and light of the park into the displays.
After a £68 million refurbishment the museum reopened in March 2022 with far more of the collection on show and was named Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2023. Highlights span six millennia, from ancient Mesopotamian carvings and Chinese ceramics to medieval stained glass, tapestries and paintings by Degas, Manet and Cézanne.
