Art Nouveau Centre and KUBE
Art Nouveau museum in the 1907 Swan Pharmacy, paired with the KUBE art museum next door.
A fire destroyed most of central Alesund in January 1904, and the town was rebuilt within a few years in the Art Nouveau manner then current across Europe. The Art Nouveau Centre, Jugendstilsenteret, occupies one of the finest survivors of that rebuilding: the Swan Pharmacy at Apotekergata 16, completed in 1907 to designs by Hagbart Schytte-Berg and used as both dispensary and family home. The museum opened in 2003 and holds the national remit for Art Nouveau in Norway.
Visitors can see the original pharmacy interior, a preserved dining room and a collection of furniture, glass, ceramics and enamel, together with a multimedia time machine that recounts the fire and the rebuilding. The neighbouring KUBE, in a former branch of Norges Bank of 1906 converted in 2005, serves as the art museum of More og Romsdal county and shows changing contemporary exhibitions. The two buildings are joined and share a single entrance and ticket.
