Ethnographic Museum of Gjakova
Nineteenth-century town house near the Grand Bazaar, furnished as a museum of Gjakova life and crafts.
The museum occupies a traditional Gjakova dwelling of the nineteenth century, close to the Grand Bazaar and the Hadum Mosque in the old heart of the town. The house has two storeys and two annexes arranged around a cruciform corridor, with a large reception room in the left wing and open fireplaces in several rooms. Timber galleries and a balcony look on to the enclosed courtyard, in the pattern of the walled kulla and town houses of western Kosovo.
Room settings show how such a household lived, with low divans, carved chests, copper and brassware, looms and kitchen equipment in place. The collections cover costume and textiles from the Dukagjin plain, silver filigree and other work of the Gjakova guilds, musical instruments, agricultural tools and domestic objects, and are among the largest ethnographic holdings in Kosovo. Guides explain the rooms, and a short visit normally takes about twenty minutes.
