Science Museum
Landmark objects and hands-on galleries charting centuries of science and invention.
The Science Museum traces its origins to 1857, when science and technology collections formed part of the South Kensington Museum established after the Great Exhibition. It became a separate institution in 1909, and its main Exhibition Road building opened in stages from the 1920s. Today it is one of London's most visited museums, with free general admission.
Its galleries trace the story of science, engineering and medicine through landmark objects, from early steam engines and pioneering locomotives to the Apollo 10 command module. Interactive spaces such as Wonderlab sit alongside an IMAX cinema, and a multi-year transformation of the ground floor is under way, beginning with the new Space gallery that opened in September 2025.
