Dzintari Concert Hall
Seaside resort concert venue pairing a 1936 indoor hall with an open-air summer auditorium
Dzintari Concert Hall stands in the pine woods a short walk from the beach in the Dzintari district of Jurmala. The enclosed hall of about 690 seats was completed in 1936 to designs by Aleksandrs Birzenieks and Viktors Mellenbergs, a distinctive piece of interwar resort architecture mixing national romantic and art deco motifs. Its foyer keeps wall paintings by the Jurmala-born artist Ansis Cirulis. This building is now used as the Small Hall and works year-round.
In 1960 an open-air auditorium seating roughly two thousand was added beside it by Modris Gelzis and Alberts Vecsilis, the first venue of its kind in Latvia, its timber-lined canopy open to the surrounding trees. Both halls were restored in the 2000s and 2010s and the site is listed in the Latvian Culture Canon. Programming covers symphonic and chamber music, jazz, choral concerts and family events, with the Great Hall used for large summer festivals.
