Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall
Yerevan's main concert hall in Tamanyan's circular opera building, home of the National Philharmonic.
The hall occupies the northern half of the circular opera and concert building on Freedom Square that Alexander Tamanyan designed in the 1930s. Tamanyan died in 1936 with the scheme unfinished, and the concert half was completed under his son Gevorg Tamanyan and opened in 1963. Faced in pink and black volcanic tuff, it seats about 1,400 beneath a coffered ceiling, and takes its name from the composer Aram Khachaturian, who conducted here.
The hall is the home of the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1925, and hosts the greater part of the country's symphonic season as well as chamber recitals, choral and jazz programmes and visiting soloists. It is also the central venue of the Yerevan International Music Festival each autumn. The building was refurbished in the 2000s, when the auditorium acoustics and seating were reworked and a concert organ installed.
