Philharmonie de Paris
Jean Nouvel’s concert hall in the Parc de la Villette, home of the Orchestre de Paris.
The Philharmonie de Paris opened in January 2015 at the edge of the Parc de la Villette in north-east Paris. Jean Nouvel designed the building, which is covered in thousands of grey aluminium tiles shaped like birds. A public path climbs to a rooftop viewpoint with views over the city.
Its main hall, the Grande salle Pierre Boulez, seats about 2,400 people on balconies that wrap around the stage, so the audience sits unusually close to the musicians. The hall is home to the Orchestre de Paris and welcomes visiting orchestras plus classical, jazz, pop and world music. The wider complex also includes the Museum of Music.
