Stavanger Concert Hall
Waterside concert hall of 2012 with two auditoriums, home of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.
Stavanger Concert Hall stands on the Bjergsted headland above the harbour, a short walk north of the old town. Ratio Arkitekter won an open international competition held in 2003, and the building was inaugurated on 15 September 2012. It contains two auditoriums set side by side behind a glazed foyer that opens towards the sea, with a stepped outdoor amphitheatre on the water side. Construction was funded jointly by the city of Stavanger, Rogaland county, the Norwegian state and private sponsors.
The larger room, Fartein Valen, is named after the modernist composer from Rogaland and is tuned for symphonic music; its acoustic design was carried out with Kahle Acoustics. The second hall, Zetlitz, honours the Stavanger-born poet and clergyman Jens Zetlitz and takes amplified concerts, comedy, dance and conferences. The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1938, is the resident ensemble, and the complex sits within the Bjergsted cultural park alongside the region's music academy.
