Kazakhstan Central Concert Hall
Petal-shaped concert hall of 2009 by Manfredi Nicoletti, home of the Qazaqconcert organisation.
The hall was designed by the Italian architect Manfredi Nicoletti, begun in 2004 and inaugurated on 15 December 2009, Kazakhstan's Independence Day. Its shell is formed of curved, inclined concrete walls clad in blue back-painted glass, splayed like the petals of a flower; the arrangement shelters the interior from the extreme winters and summers of the steppe. Behind the petals lies a foyer thirty metres high running to some 3,000 square metres.
There are three auditoria: a main hall of about 3,500 seats, a chamber hall of around 400 and a smaller room of roughly 200. Acoustics in the main hall are adjusted with movable curtains and a coffered ceiling designed to absorb stray reflections, allowing the room to serve symphonic concerts, amplified shows and conferences. The building is the base of Qazaqconcert, the state academic concert organisation named after the singer Roza Baglanova, whose orchestras, folk ensembles and soloists appear here through the season.
