Gran Teatro Nacional
Peru's main concert and opera house in San Borja, home to the national orchestra, choir and ballet.
The Gran Teatro Nacional was inaugurated in July 2011 and is the principal performing arts venue of the Peruvian state, managed by the Ministry of Culture. Its main auditorium seats around 1,500 and was built with a full stage tower and adjustable acoustics so that it can take opera, symphonic concerts, ballet and drama. The national companies based there include the National Symphony Orchestra, the National Choir, the National Ballet and the Bicentenary National Youth Symphony Orchestra.
The building stands in San Borja beside the Museo de la Nación and the National Library, forming a cluster of state cultural institutions on Avenida Javier Prado. Alfonso de la Piedra led the architectural design and José Nepomuceno the acoustic and stage engineering. Programming mixes classical repertoire with Peruvian popular, Andean and Afro-Peruvian music, family shows and free events, and the theatre runs accessible visits and guided tours alongside its season.
