Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Centre
İzmir's main concert complex, home to the İzmir State Symphony Orchestra and touring performers.
The Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Centre stands on Mithatpaşa Caddesi in the Güzelyalı district of İzmir, a short distance from the shore of the gulf. Built by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and opened on 27 December 2008, it is named after the composer Ahmed Adnan Saygun, a leading member of the group known as the Turkish Five, who was born in the city in 1907. The complex was planned as a purpose-built concert and congress venue for the region.
The building contains a main auditorium seating about 1,150 and a chamber hall of roughly 240 places, together with rehearsal rooms, exhibition galleries and conference facilities. The İzmir State Symphony Orchestra gives most of its subscription concerts in the large hall, generally on Friday evenings, and the centre also presents recitals, ballet, jazz, world music and festival programmes. Foyer galleries carry changing exhibitions of photography and painting. A tram stop on the Konak line bears the centre's name.
