TivoliVredenburg
Stacked five-hall music centre in Utrecht covering classical, pop, jazz, club nights and festivals.
TivoliVredenburg opened in 2014 as a single building holding five concert halls stacked around and above one another. It brought together the former Vredenburg concert hall and the pop venue Tivoli, and now stages classical, pop, jazz, electronic, global and metal programmes in the same complex, often on the same night. The halls are the Grote Zaal, Ronda, Pandora, Hertz and Cloud Nine, with capacities ranging from a few hundred to around 1,900, and the house presents roughly 1,500 events a year.
At its core is Herman Hertzberger's Vredenburg hall of 1979, a vineyard-shaped auditorium whose seating wraps the platform; it was retained and wrapped in new volumes designed with Architectuurstudio HH, NL Architects, Thijs Asselbergs and Jo Coenen. Heavy acoustic separation lets an orchestra and a club night run simultaneously. The building stands beside Utrecht Centraal station and serves as the hub of the Le Guess Who? festival and of the Utrecht early music and film festivals.
