Palacio de la Música
Concert hall and interactive museum of Mexican music in Mérida's historic centre, opened in 2018.
The Palacio de la Música, formally the Centro Nacional de la Música Mexicana, opened in June 2018 on the site of the former Yucatán legislature in the historic centre of Mérida. Four practices — Muñoz Arquitectos, Alejandro Medina Arquitectura, Quesnel Arquitectos and Reyes Ríos + Larraín — designed the building of some 8,800 square metres over four levels, working under the technical supervision of the National Institute of Anthropology and History. Its stone and concrete frontage is set deliberately against the colonial houses around it.
The museum occupies eight pavilions that trace Mexican music from pre-Hispanic instruments through folk and regional traditions to recording and broadcasting, using interactive screens, listening posts and a room laid out like the courtyard of a henequen hacienda for Yucatecan trova. The concert hall seats 458 and is lined with regional timber, while the terrace and the string courtyard hold further performances. Since the fire at the Teatro José Peón Contreras the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra has given its main season here.
