Auditorio Nacional Adela Reta
Uruguay's national auditorium, home of the Sodre orchestra, choir and National Ballet.
The auditorium stands on the site of the Teatro Urquiza, which the state broadcaster Sodre had used as its studio theatre until fire destroyed it in September 1971. A replacement was designed by the team of Jorge Di Pólito, Diego Magnone, Isidoro Singer and Juan Carlos Vanini, and building began in 1989. Work stopped repeatedly for lack of funds and the complex was finally opened on 21 November 2009. It carries the name of Adela Reta, the lawyer and minister who had presided over Sodre.
The main Eduardo Fabini hall seats about two thousand under a ceiling twenty-seven metres high, with an adjustable proscenium and a pit for more than a hundred players. The smaller Hugo Balzo hall holds around 280 and is used for chamber music, recitals and talks. The building is the base of the National Symphony Orchestra, the National Choir and the Ballet Nacional Sodre, and also hosts opera, visiting companies and film screenings. It was listed as a national historical monument in 2019.
