Auditorio de Tenerife Adan Martin
Calatrava's wave-crested concert hall on the Atlantic shore, home of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra.
The auditorium was designed by Santiago Calatrava and inaugurated in September 2003 on reclaimed land beside the port of Santa Cruz, next to the sixteenth-century castle of San Juan Bautista. Its defining feature is a curved concrete shell, sometimes called the wing or the wave, which rises about 58 metres and cantilevers over the building without touching it along most of its length. The exterior is finished in broken white ceramic tiling, a technique that reflects the strong Atlantic light.
Inside there are two halls: the Sala Sinfonica, a fan-shaped concert hall seating around 1,600 beneath a suspended acoustic canopy and a pipe organ, and the smaller Sala de Camara for chamber music and theatre. The building is the home of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and hosts an annual opera season, the Festival de Musica de Canarias, dance, jazz and contemporary performing arts. Guided tours take visitors backstage and into the halls on days without rehearsals.
