Macedonian Opera and Ballet
North Macedonia's national opera and ballet company in a concrete modernist hall beside the Vardar.
The Macedonian Opera and Ballet is the country's national lyric company, tracing its opera ensemble to 1947 and its ballet ensemble to 1949. Since 1981 it has performed in a purpose-built complex on the left bank of the Vardar, part of the Universal Hall and cultural centre schemes drawn up after the 1963 Skopje earthquake. The repertoire combines Italian and Slavic standards with Macedonian works, and the company also tours and hosts guest productions from the wider region.
The building is one of the clearest surviving statements of Skopje's post-earthquake modernism. A team from the Slovenian practice Biro 71 won the competition with a low, sculpted mass of white concrete shells that step down towards the river, wrapping a main auditorium, a smaller hall and extensive rehearsal space. The interior mixes board-marked concrete with timber linings. Visitors normally see the foyers and auditorium in the course of an evening performance rather than on a separate daytime tour.
