Philharmonic of North Macedonia
Purpose-built concert hall on the Vardar, home of the national orchestra since 2017.
The Philharmonic of the Republic of North Macedonia was founded in 1944 and for more than seventy years played in borrowed halls in Skopje. Its own building, on the left bank of the Vardar near the centre, opened in 2017. The design places a Grand Hall of about a thousand seats above a foyer that opens onto the river, with a chamber hall of some three hundred and ten seats, rehearsal rooms, a cafe and a recording facility in the same block.
The Grand Hall was built around its acoustics, with free-form reflecting ceilings and curved wall panels, and is used for recording as well as for concerts. The orchestra plays a weekly subscription series through the season with guest conductors and soloists from abroad, and runs morning concerts for children and families, chamber programmes in the smaller hall and tours to other Macedonian towns. The building is also hired for festivals and for visiting orchestras and ensembles.
