Sala Minas Gerais
Belo Horizonte's 1,477-seat concert hall, opened in 2015 as home of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic.
Opened in February 2015, the Sala Minas Gerais was built as a permanent home for the Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais, which had played in borrowed halls since its founding in 2008. It forms part of the Centro de Cultura Presidente Itamar Franco in the Barro Preto district, a complex of some 32,000 square metres that also houses the state broadcaster and other cultural spaces. The architects were Jô Vasconcellos and Rafael Yanni.
The auditorium holds 1,477 people in tiers that wrap partly around the platform, a vineyard arrangement that keeps sightlines short and brings the audience close to the players. Acoustic design by José Augusto Nepomuceno added sail-shaped diffusing walls, ceiling reflectors and absorbent seating so that the room suits both full orchestra with chorus and smaller chamber forces. The orchestra's season runs from February to December, with evening subscription concerts and free morning concerts for young audiences.
