National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus
Belarus's national opera and ballet company in Langbard's constructivist theatre above the Svislach.
The company was formed in 1933 and moved in 1939 into a purpose-built house on Troitskaya Hill designed by Iosif Langbard. His design strips classical theatre form back to plain cylindrical and rectangular volumes, an austere late-constructivist scheme originally intended to be far larger. The building was damaged and looted during the German occupation, then repaired after 1945. A major reconstruction completed in 2009 restored Langbard's exterior, rebuilt the stage machinery and laid out the surrounding park with fountains and sculpture.
The auditorium seats roughly 1,200, and a smaller chamber hall hosts baroque and contemporary work. The repertoire combines the standard Italian, French, Russian and German operas with ballet classics such as Swan Lake, Giselle and Don Quixote, and with Belarusian works including Uladzimir Soltan's The Wild Hunt of King Stakh. Valentin Elizariev, who led the ballet company for decades, created many of the productions still danced here. The theatre also offers backstage tours.
