DR Concert Hall
Jean Nouvel's blue-veiled concert hall in Ørestad, home of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.
DR Koncerthuset was inaugurated in January 2009 as the centrepiece of DR Byen, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's campus in Ørestad. Jean Nouvel wrapped the building in a translucent blue fibreglass mesh stretched over a cable net, which acts as a screen for projected images after dark and conceals the timber-clad concert hall inside. Nagata Acoustics, led by Yasuhisa Toyota, shaped the acoustics of the main auditorium, whose terraced seating surrounds the platform on all sides.
The main hall seats about 1,800 and holds an organ by the Dutch builders Van den Heuvel with some ninety stops. Three further studios with variable acoustics host chamber music, jazz, electronic sets and broadcast recordings. The building is the base of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Danish National Concert Choir, the Danish National Vocal Ensemble, the Danish National Girls' Choir and the Danish National Chamber Orchestra, and its programme also takes in rock, world music and events for children.
