A. G. Leventis Gallery
Stone-clad gallery of 2014 holding Cypriot, Greek and European paintings over three collections.
The gallery presents the art collection assembled by the Cypriot businessman and philanthropist Anastasios G. Leventis, who died in 1978 and left instructions that it be shown in Nicosia. The building that now houses it was chosen through an international competition run by RIBA Competitions, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios with the Cypriot practice J&A Philippou, built from 2011 and opened to the public in March 2014. It also contains a restaurant and apartments.
More than eight hundred works are arranged in three parts. The Paris Collection covers French and other European painting of the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, including landscape and marine subjects. The Greek Collection follows Greek art from the early nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth. The Cyprus Collection gathers work by Cypriot artists together with prints and maps of the island. The exterior is faced in stone, cut back to form courtyards and recessed openings.
