Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art
Renzo Piano glass-roofed contemporary art museum on Tjuvholmen, with an adjoining sculpture park.
The Astrup Fearnley Museum is a privately funded museum of contemporary art, opened in 1993 and run by the Astrup Fearnley Foundation. It moved to Tjuvholmen at the western end of the Oslo harbour in September 2012. Renzo Piano Building Workshop, with the Norwegian practice Narud Stokke Wiig, split the museum into pavilions on either side of a small canal and drew a single curved glass roof over them, carried on slender timber and steel beams.
The collection concentrates on international art from the 1980s onwards, with holdings by Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Cindy Sherman, Matthew Barney and Anselm Kiefer, alongside Nordic artists. Changing exhibitions fill the galleries through the year. Outside, the Tjuvholmen Sculpture Park runs down to a beach at the tip of the peninsula and shows works by artists including Louise Bourgeois, Anish Kapoor and Ugo Rondinone, free to walk round at any time.
