Moravian Gallery in Brno
Czechia's second largest art museum, spread across five historic Brno buildings and a Brtnice house.
The Moravian Gallery was formed in 1961 by merging the Moravian Industrial Museum, founded in 1873, with the picture gallery of the Moravian Regional Museum. It describes itself as the second largest art museum in the Czech Republic, and its holdings range from Gothic panels and old master paintings to modern and contemporary art, graphic design, photography and applied arts such as glass, ceramics, textiles, furniture and metalware. The collection is shown across several separate buildings rather than one single site.
Visitors move between the neo-Renaissance Prazak Palace on Husova street, which holds the directorate, the specialist library and the ART IS HERE displays of modern and post-1945 art; the Museum of Applied Arts next door; the baroque Governor's Palace on Moravske namesti; the art nouveau Jurkovic House in Zabovresky; an open depository in Reckovice; and the Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice. Since 1963 the gallery has also run the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno.
