Tate St Ives
Modern art above Porthmeor Beach, rooted in the St Ives artists’ colony.
Tate St Ives sits above Porthmeor Beach on the site of a former gasworks, and its curved white rotunda looks straight out over the Atlantic. Opened in 1993 as Tate's second gallery outside London, it celebrates the modern artists who made St Ives an international centre for art in the mid-20th century, alongside changing exhibitions of contemporary and international work.
A major expansion designed by Jamie Fobert Architects doubled the size of the gallery and reopened in October 2017; the new building was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize. Tate also runs the nearby Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, making the town a natural pilgrimage for lovers of British modernism.
