Mudam Luxembourg - Museum of Modern Art Grand-Duke Jean
Luxembourg's contemporary art museum, an I. M. Pei building set on the ramparts of Fort Thuengen.
Mudam Luxembourg opened on 1 July 2006 on the Kirchberg plateau, built above the surviving bastion of Fort Thuengen, an eighteenth-century Vauban fortification. The commission went to the Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei, who set a wedge-shaped building of Magny limestone and glass on the old stonework, with a glazed atrium rising over the entrance hall. The museum is run by a foundation established in 1996 and carries the name of Grand Duke Jean, who reigned from 1964 to 2000.
The collection covers art made since the 1990s across painting, photography, design, fashion, installation and moving image, with a strong holding of works commissioned directly for the building's galleries. Artists represented include Cy Twombly, Wim Delvoye, Bert Theis, Thomas Struth and Su-Mei Tse, who represented Luxembourg at the Venice Biennale. Temporary exhibitions occupy several floors, and the site also takes in the neighbouring Drai Eechelen museum and the surrounding fortress park.
